In the world of digital cameras there are a vast variety of makes and models from which to choose. Even for the adept, it can be a little intimidating. If you are one of the many who are venturing into the world of digital imagery for the first time, it can be a downright daunting task to select the right camera from the mass of whirring shutters. Our task today is to find out if the DXG-308U is just such a camera.

Note: So I achieve my goal of making you a more informed buyer and so you understand better what in the heck I am talking about, I include this link to an on-line glossary of digital camera terms and their definitions. Where appropriate, I will include the definition for you: Crutchfield Advisor

Perhaps the best way to describe the niche into which this camera falls is to let DXG provide it themselves:

"DXG develops cameras for first-time and secondary buyers who want an inexpensive everyday camera for spontaneous shots. DXG does not specifically target the advanced PC enthusiast or early gadget adopters due to the costlier needs of these audiences.

DXG cameras are priced to provide all of the necessary features and a host of extras, which provide users real value. As digital camera technology continues to advance pushing today's market prices down, DXG will continue include new capabilities and features in line with what the consumer desire at the entry level price point."

I couldn't have said it better myself. If you are looking for the latest advances in digital camera technology, you most certainly will pay for it. As you read on through the rest of the review and view the pictures taken with the DXG-308U, keep those comments in mind. This isn't a top-of-the-line $2000 SLR unit. It's a sub-$150 entry-level digital camera designed for outdoor/underwater use. Be aware of the features, versatility and software of the camera as you consider its performance. Make a decision on what you want to achieve with your first, or in some cases secondary, digital camera purchase. Some keywords to bear in mind are: simplicity, ease of use, value, quality and support. All of these and more will be discussed in the paragraphs below.

First let's have a look at what you get when you purchase the DXG-308U:

  • DXG-308U
  • Software CD (Funhouse, Video Impression, Photo Impression, Photo Base - All from Arcsoft)
  • Soft camera pouch
  • USB cable
  • TV-out cable
  • Wrist strap x 2 (one for use with housing and one without)
  • 2 x AA batteries
  • User manual
  • Water-resistant housing manual/care guide
  • Warranty card
  • Quick start guide
  • Photosite.com information sheet
  • All this is pretty standard for a camera package. One thing that I would like to see manufacturers start offering is a flash memory card, even 32MB would be nice. The internal memory of 16MB (which is common among even higher priced units) is simply too small for a significant amount of high quality pictures. This is not a critique of DXG specifically; this is a complaint for the whole industry. Prices for the SD/MMC cards (types of memory this unit is compatible with) are very reasonable and could be used as an incentive for potential customers. (NOTE: The problem is what size to provide - some customers may want a 64MB card, some may want a 512MB card. Providing too small a card requires people to still purchase another one, while too large a card jeopardizes the entry-level price point).

As far as requirements for use of the camera, any PC made within the last 5 years would be more than enough. You will need to be running Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP with an Intel/AMD processor of 166MHz or higher. In addition, you are required to have 32MB of RAM or higher, a USB 1.1 port unless you have a flash memory card reader capable of accepting SD/MMC cards. A couple of other items are a CD-ROM of 4x speed or higher and at least 10MB of free HDD space.

Because the target audience of this unit is the beginner or novice shutterbug, the technical specifications may read like some bizarre code from the land of the geeks. First, don't be intimated. Most people have no idea what it all means either. The most important thing is how it works and what the pictures look like. If you insist on knowing the obtuse details anyway, make your way over to http://www.dxg.us and read to your hearts content. I will cover a few of the minutiae as we move along, so be aware.
