The documentation that Olympus provides is, as usual, outstanding. All the instructions are provided in multiple languages, complete with pictures/diagrams for ease of installation and use. One issue I found was the pictures provided concerning the insertion of the film carriage was confusing. The image appears to indicate that you install the carriage opposite of the way it actually fits into the printer. Only a minor problem but one that caused me to attempt it the wrong way and completely trash the starter roll of film. Luckily, the stars were on my side as they had graciously sent along another full roll of film and 50 more sheets of high quality paper. Perhaps my reputation preceeds me. After the initial fiasco with the film, things went flawlessly with assembly. As can be seen from the picture below, the P-400 is slightly larger than my current HP712C. The horizontal footprint is marginally longer, while the vertical is considerably higher. This might pose a problem for those with limited space, such as myself. I was utilizing a roll-top desk at the time and it wouldn't permit placement of the P-400 on the desk. No problem, the floor will be a suitable replacement.

The P-400 has a sleek, if not somewhat stocky look. The footprint of the unit is 17 inches wide, 11 inches deep and 12 ½ inches high. You can see the size differential with my current printer, the HP 712C.

The extra height was, as mentioned earlier, a problem for me. Due to the method in which the print is transferred to the paper, this orientation for the feeding is necessary. In the picture below you can see the comparison of the horizontal dimensions.

In order to load the ribbon cassette, you need to depress the buttons on either side of the front of the unit. This is a look at the film installed.
